For Good

On May 29, 2026, the Gay Men's Chorus of Tampa Bay gathered at Allendale United Methodist Church in St. Petersburg, Florida, for "Love in Technicolor," and in Act Two's "Let's Go to the Movies!" set the full chorus turned to "For Good," Stephen Schwartz's beloved duet from Wicked, here heard in Alex Rybeck's richly voiced arrangement for men's voices and piano.

Rybeck's TTBB setting is the heart of the number's appeal. Where the stage original pairs two voices in confession, this arrangement opens that intimacy outward, spreading Schwartz's interlocking melodies across the sections so that the two famous tunes weave together as full-chorus counterpoint. The piano underpins rather than crowds, leaving room for warm, hymn-like part-writing and the lifted, suspended harmonies that make the final cadence ache.

The chorus sang it with disciplined tenderness. The blend was seamless through the quiet opening, baritones and basses anchoring a soft cushion beneath the tenors' rising line, and the diction stayed clear so Schwartz's plainspoken lyric registered. The dynamic shaping was patient, building from near-whisper to a full, ringing climax without ever forcing the tone, and the sectional balance held steady through the close harmonies.

Allendale's resonant sanctuary suited the writing beautifully, letting the sustained chords bloom and decay naturally and lending the unison passages a glowing depth. The hush at the final, unresolved-feeling chord lingered before the room broke into warm, sustained applause, many in the audience visibly moved by a song that needs no spectacle to land.

Within "Let's Go to the Movies!," "For Good" stood as the set's emotional anchor, a reminder that the season's most cinematic moment was also its most human. For a chorus built on chosen family, a song about how friendship changes us for good felt less like a cover than a creed sung straight from the heart.
