Emotions

On May 16, 2025, the Gay Men’s Chorus of Tampa Bay lit up the second half of their concert, “Tyler’s Suite / I Love the 90’s,” with a show-stopping, high-energy performance of “Emotions” by Mariah Carey, accompanied by Kevin Wu on piano. The performance took place at Allendale United Methodist Church in St. Petersburg, Florida, a venue known for embracing bold expression, inclusion, and celebration of diversity—making it a fitting stage for this joyful musical homage.

As the concert transitioned from the deeply reflective and emotionally resonant first half—Tyler’s Suite, honoring the life and legacy of Tyler Clementi—the mood shifted into pure celebration, and “Emotions” captured that spirit with style, soul, and sparkle. Originally released in 1991, Mariah Carey’s “Emotions” is a vocal powerhouse of a song, celebrated for its iconic whistle notes, effervescent energy, and unapologetic joy. For many in the LGBTQ+ community, it’s more than a pop hit; it’s an anthem of liberation, self-expression, and unapologetic fabulousness.

The Gay Men’s Chorus of Tampa Bay brought the house down with their vibrant harmonies, rhythmic precision, and infectious enthusiasm. From the opening chords, the audience was drawn into the electrifying groove, clapping along, swaying in their seats, and cheering on the chorus’s fearless vocal stylings. It was a moment of collective release—of sheer musical joy that radiated through the historic sanctuary.

Kevin Wu anchored the performance on piano with a dynamic and driving accompaniment, capturing both the funk-infused groove of the original track and the theatrical flair the chorus brought to the stage. His energetic playing was the engine behind the performance, giving the singers space to soar while propelling the tempo and excitement forward.

This rendition of “Emotions” was more than just a nostalgic throwback—it was a celebration of resilience, queer joy, and the cultural legacy of 1990s music that helped shape the identities of so many in the LGBTQ+ community. Placed intentionally after the emotional weight of Tyler’s Suite, the performance allowed the audience to shift from reflection to release, from mourning to movement, from remembrance to revelry.

In a concert that held space for both grief and joy, vulnerability and celebration, “Emotions” stood as a testament to the chorus’s mission: to uplift, to honor, and to celebrate through the transformative power of music.
