Hit the Road Jack
On the evening of March 22, 2025, the Gay Men's Chorus of Tampa Bay delivered a rousing and theatrical performance of “Hit the Road Jack” by Percy Mayfield, arranged by the renowned choral arranger Emily Crocker, as part of their spring concert titled “Say My Name!” Held at the intimate yet dynamic Jaeb Theater at The Straz Center for the Performing Arts in Tampa, Florida, the event celebrated identity, self-expression, and the power of voice—both literal and metaphorical.
The rendition of “Hit the Road Jack” was a standout moment in the program. Crocker's arrangement transformed the classic rhythm-and-blues number into a choral showcase, layering bold harmonies, sassy call-and-response patterns, and rich vocal textures that allowed the ensemble to play with both musicality and personality. The chorus leaned into the song’s defiant spirit, infusing it with playful theatricality and a touch of camp that had the audience laughing and clapping along. The performance walked a brilliant line between musical precision and cabaret flair, with soloists adding character and charm to the iconic back-and-forth lyrics.
In the broader context of “Say My Name!”, a concert themed around names, identity, and personal empowerment, this number served as both comic relief and a deeper cultural nod to reclaiming space, setting boundaries, and asserting dignity—a particularly resonant theme in LGBTQ+ artistic expression. The Gay Men’s Chorus of Tampa Bay used the moment not only to entertain, but to embody the cheeky resilience and collective strength that defines their community.
With the Jaeb Theater’s cozy ambiance and excellent acoustics, the performance felt both personal and electric, showcasing the ensemble’s versatility and commitment to artistry with a message.
